for the past few months, i give up an hour and a half on wednesdays to tutor math to 4th graders. math. i hate math. i was actually conned into doing this. winstead (the company i work for) sponsors travis heights elementary school. one of the things they do is tutor. there are various subjects - but i think we've done math each year. so my co-worker, courtney, called me one day and said "hey, i'm doing this math tutoring gig at travis heights. we really need more volunteers." that was it. that's all she said...she GUILTED me into doing this and now she's on leave and isn't participating in it anymore.
i do have to admit, it is kind of fun. though math is SO not taught the way i learned it. they use all these boxes and have all these cool names and games for everything. for the past three weeks, we've played the dice game. you roll the dice, you say (for example) 1+1=2, or 2+2=4 so 4-2=2. it's a cute fun game and they enjoy it. they're learning division now...which is interesting. we play the dice game for multiplication and division and they have a cheat sheet to use....and I have to use it too! i've always been pretty bad (okay, horrible) at math...so, i guess this is a learning course for me too.
anyway, our time with the kids is down to 4 weeks...and i have to say, i'm pretty sad about that. it's a great feeling knowing that you're helping kids that don't understand...and helping the smart kids...well, teach me a thing or two.
